Years after surrendering half her vital heart essence to pull an undercover monarch from blazing destruction, a sickly elf lives in penury beside her young son. A scheming rival stole credit for the valiant rescue, driving the true savior away under false pretenses that left the monarch deeply embittered. Destiny intervenes when the impoverished vendor rescues an elderly noblewoman, who happens to be the ruler's ailing mother. Though the king greets his former beloved with icy disdain, lingering affection compels him to assist her from the shadows as court conspiracies and suppressed medical realities come to light.
